Law school (2021)

·

Law School is a drama that came out last year and I didn’t get to watch it until just recently since I became a big fangirl of Kim Bum. This show is obviously a court drama and to tell you the truth I’m not a huge fan of this particular genre but even then I liked it a lot.

Kim Bum plays a character name Han Joon Hwi and he graduated from the police academy with honors and he also got into Hankuk Law school with honors as well. Hanguk Law School is a very prestious ivy university for Law and Han Joon Hwi was able to get into this school with honoros. So yeah, he is a smart guy. However behind all that sucess an prestige there’s a lot of unknown drama in his life as well…..

One day, Joon Hwi gets accused of murdering his uncle and things change for him. Joon Hwi got a lot of respect from his peers, colleagues and even his professors because he was very smart, he was helpful towards his fellow classmates and he’s also a good looking guy and popular with the ladies too. But all this changes after people start finding out about him possibly being a murderer. His aunt came by one day to the school and said that, Joon Hwi is the one who murederd his own uncle and that changed their views about him.

The other students left post it notes saying he should leave the school, he should get kicked out, and they don’t want to take classes with a murderer. However, despite all this he has friends and professors that are there for him which are the main core cast of this show. Also he is there for his peers and profesors that he care about as well.

Han Joon Hwi interacts a lot with his fellow student, Kang Sol A played by Ryu Hye young. She was raised by a single mother who’s barely making ends meet, since the other is always at work she looks after her little sister Kang Byul played by Park Soyi…. Also, Kang Sol A isn’t as smart as Han Joon Hwi so she had no intention in going into Hankuk University until that one incident at the used book store.

Kang Sol A goes to this used book store to sell her books that her younger sister Kang Dan left her. And Kang Dan or Erica Shin is alsoplayed by the same actress, Ryu Hye Young. Kang Sol A goes to the book store to sell her used books but the owner of the used book store didn’t want to give her a lot of money for it but Han Joon Hwi gave her the money to shut her up so he can watch the news. This is how she meets her peer from the law school.

Professor Yang Jong Hoon is also one of the main casts in this. He is played by actor Kim Myung Min. He is a very strict teacher and on the surface it looks he is giving them a hard time but in reality he really does care about his students and want him to succeed. And there is another profesor named, Kim Eun Sook who is played by actress Lee Jung Eun. She is a very supportive professor to our main students that we see on this show. She shows love and care more directly than Professor Yang.

I really like this character that I’m about to talk about now. This charcter’s name is Jeon Yesul played by the actress Go Yun Jung. At first I didn’t think i would like her because she just looked like one of those air headed surfacy types. However her character had depth despite what she looked like. She wants to focus and be a good student but was distracted by her boyfriend. Her boyfriend was abusive and darn near obsessive to the point where he would stalk her every move. I felt bad for her because in the name of love she was willing to take the abuse which she shouldn’t.

There’s Kang Sol B, played by Lee Soo Kyung. She is the roommate of Kang Sol A. She’s a bit younger, stoic, doesn’t say much but also very smart like Han Joon Hwi. You can tell that has a thing for her sunbae but very quiet about it. She is from a well to do household and her mother is very obsessive about her being on top. And when she’s not performing to be the top of her class, Kang Sol B’s mother gets almost hysterical. She tried to live her dreams through her husband but he just couldn’t deliver so she depends on her daughter to fulfill her dreams.

We also have another student name Seo Ji Ho played by David Lee. Ji Ho is a bit younger too, kinda like Kang Sol B and he is Han Joon Hwi’s roommate. Ji Ho is kinda like Kang Sol B, because he doesn’t talk much and seems to be whatever about most of the things going on. However, he is occupied in trying to solve a case involving his father.

There are also students by the name Yoo Seung Jae played by Hyun Woo and Min Bok Gi played by Lee Kangji. Yoo Seung Jae is the slightly older student who is like a big brother to the our main core cast of students. He is so good that his esays are so perfect as if he went inside of the professors’ heads but there is something behind all that as wel. Min Bok Gi wants to be a human rights lawyer although he is not the best and the brightest of the bunch.

There are sixteen episodes in this show altogethr and you can watch it on Netflix with or without subs. I generally liked it despite the fact that I’m not a huge fan of court dramas for the most part. And I think it’s mainly cus of Kim Bum, my latest craze! I think the only Korean court drama that I really enjoyed was Defendant that came out in 2017, which starred Ji Sung. It’s kinda funny cus two of the supporting actors from Defendant are in this show too.

The reason why I liked this show is because of Kim Bum’s acting and just Kim Bum’s presence alone. Not just that but seeing Kim bum as a main character was refreshing as well. In most of the shows he’s been in, he was usually a supporting character but in this he was the main character besides Ryu Hye Young’s Kang Sol A and Kim Myung Min’s Professor Yang.

Seeing Kim Bum do something other than romantic comedy was great. No love triangles? This is hard to say beause I think there was a subtle romance going on between Kang Sol A and Han Joon Hwi, although we don’t see it on screen but at the same time they are super good friends and colleagues. And Kang Sol B kinda likes her sunbae but is quiet about it so if there is a love triangle, it’s shown underhandedly. I thought that was a bit refreshing cus they don’t focus on the romance element much unlike most of the shows that Kim Bum is known for. On the same token people or rather fans were cheering for Joonhwi Kangsol A couple and I am one of them. Less is more I guess because you can’t help but to want more of them……..

I also liked Kim Bum’s outfits in this show. It’s been very rare to see him in more casual outfits apart from when he was 17 in High Kick. Most have just seen him dress really nice like in Boys Over Flowers so it was cool to see him in sweats, sweatpants, sweaters, t-shirts, hoodies, jeans, denim shirts, khakis and tennis shoes…It was so relatable and approachable like a guy next door.

Oh yeah, I should mention that this drama talks about justice and how it should be solved with tenacity. The main villain of this show is Mr. Go or Go Hyung Soo acted by Jung Won Joong. He is a very ambitious man who is trying to get a spot in the government as congressman. He also has a son Go Young Chang who is the boyfriend of Jeon Yesul. He assulted his girlfriend, and abused her in many different ways. Go Hyung Soo didn’t want this to go out because he’s scared that it could affect his political career…..

This show talks about justice and not giving up on solving it just cause it seems difficult to solve. I am all for that so I guess I like the message. I also love the chemistry between the cast. The ensemble between all the students and the professors work really great together.

I also couldn’t help but to root for the people that need justice to be served, and for the students and teachers that want to make things right. Also, I was rooting for Han Joon Hwi and Kang Sol A!And my new found love Beommie Oppa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
