SHIKKIE? DRAMA TWELVE REVIEW…..

·

I liked how the episode started because of some cool animation for the intro of the show which I dig quite a bit. This is supposed to be somewhat of a fantasy story so you would expect it to be a lot more fantastical but it doesn’t  seem like it much at the beginning after the intro but some of the lines that the characters would say would most certainly feel supernatural, especially when they bring up how old they are.

I was amazed how the show was able to get their point across and made it fun without being too chaotic despite the fact that the show is only eight episodes unlike the other shows that Hyungsik has been in.

Even though Hyungsik is the main antagonist in Twelve but there wasn’t much of him in the first episode but thankfully we got to see more of him in the second episode. It makes sense that you can’t see a whole lot of Hyungsik in Twelve unlike in Buried Hearts since there are so many characters in this short 8 episode project.

Hyungsik was so looking mega HOT in all black and plus he has wings in this show too so it makes him even hotter but I don’t know how I should feel about him playing the bad guy in this  since I’m so used to him playing the protagonist and not the antagonist.

It’s great to see Ma Dongseok/Taesan as the protagonist and he will be the one going against the antagonist of the story. Ma Dongseok is quite famous in Hollywood, he was recently known for playing one of the main characters in the Marvel movie Eternals.

I only got to watch two episodes that were uploaded on Hulu and so far there’s no interaction between Ogwi and Taesan but I think by the third episode we might see their interaction and that only makes sense since Twelve only has eight episodes.

It was nice to see Seo Inguk as Wonseung and Wonseung is supposed to be the monkey in the Oriental zodiac. He was in one of the same dramas as Hyungsik around three years ago and that show was called Soundtrack #1 but unfortunately, Seo Inguk’s character did not have a chance to interact with Hyungsik’s character Han Seonwoo.

I also enjoyed a few of the other characters like Kangji and Malsook. Kangji is supposed to be year of the dog and Malsook is the year of the horse. It’s funny how the show made the characters names similar to the Oriental Zodiac signs.

For the first two episodes we didn’t get to see Hyungsik much but probably from episode 3 and forward, we’ll most certainly see more of Hyungsik although this show is only eight episodes…..

I thought the comic relief was the Oriental Medicine doctor by the named Donyi and he represents the year of the Pig. This guy is portly and he loves to eat. I loved the scene between Donyi and the little fluffy puppy at the local park.

I finally got to see all eight episodes this past weekend and I felt a little disappointed for a few reasons, overall it wasn’t a bad show but there were quite a few let downs. The first few episodes were rocky but I decided to give the benefit of the doubt but after watching all eight episodes, I now have a different opinion about this whole shebang compared to when I went into it at the beginning.

The thing that disappointed me the most was the way they utilized Hyungsik in all this because I thought there was gonna be a lot of drama between Ogwi and Taesan but it ended up that Samin was the guy who was more dangerous to the angels than Ogwi. Ogwi was just caught up in all the mess because he was in love with one of the angels who represents or symbolizes the dragon and her name is Mirr.

I think they gave us the wrong idea about Ogwi cus of the way they sold the audience of this particular project and also this show just felt like a way to show off Ma Dongseok’s action acting ability. This show was a very much an ensemble piece but we didn’t really get a character development, no particularly shining moment for each of the characters and also there was a lack of team work towards the end when it mattered the most, it was just frustrating to watch.

There were some positive things about this show and that was the neat concept of the Oriental zodiac since I’m into Oriental Astrology and all. It’s unfortunate that they didn’t utilize this cool concept to make this drama the best it could be since it was quite messy if you ask me. I think Ma Dongseok needs to practice on his writing skills. I still want to give Mr. Ma some props for at least trying since trying is half the battle.

The main reason why I watched this show was because of Hyungsik but then I want to admit that the concept of using Oriental Zodiac to tell an ensemble story was neat. However, it’s unfortunate that this whole show ended up being a thing to prop up Ma Dongseok but it makes sense since he wrote it, produced it and even helped with the directing so yes, this whole thing was just a fat Ma Deongsok project.

The drama sold it as if it was gonna be an ensemble piece but they didn’t utilize everybody properly when it mattered the most and also Hyungsik almost felt like a cameo when I watched the first 3 episodes. Thankfully it got better and showed more of Hyungsik but everything just felt so rushed.

A lot of the times I felt like the show was wasting golden opportunities to help us get to know the characters better but we didn’t get the kind of character development that I expected and we also didn’t get the shining moments of each of the core eight characters because they were too busy with the action sequences. I mean, I didn’t mind the action sequences because they were a lot of fun and I think the action stuff made the show fun to watch but then this aspect of the show was the only thing that seemed to matter so we didn’t get to see other potential aspects in this show.

Hyungsik had a lot to offer and he did great for little that was given to him. I felt like the show was misleading because I genuinely thought that we were gonna see a lot of Hyungsik and Ma Dongseok action but that wasn’t the case since Samin was the real bad guy in all this…..

I wasn’t surprised but surprised about Hyungsik’s character having a love interest. At first when I heard about Hyungsik’s character Ogwi, I initially thought that there would be no romantic interest of any kind cus he would be too busy doing evil to even have one of those but I was wrong. Although I kinda got the hint that there could be a love interest for Ogwi when I finally saw one of the trailers for Twelve.

I think this show had problems with execution and timing. I’m starting to think that this show was supposed to be longer but they had to make it short cus of the budget so that’s why the execution of the whole story seems very messy and incomplete.

Despite all the mess in this show, I did like the special effects, action sequences and the fantastical concept of the story. I think the action sequences were nice to look at and now I’m starting to wonder if this show was just to flaunt how good the actors fight on screen….

I think the main problem of this show was the execution and doing a few things out of order and also they didn’t know how to set their priorities straight while leading people on……The concept was so cool that I thought it was gonna be cool and for the most part it was especially in the action department but they mishandled the characters in a lot of ways and feeling like being led on kinda disappointed me a little….or maybe a lot….

I wonder if it would’ve been better if the four dead zodiac signs revived earlier or just have them be on the bad guy’s side forever but that wouldn’t work either since they decided to take the powers away from Samin so randomly. I was a little confused and surprised at the same time because they established early on that once Samin gets a hold of that dragon spirit from Mirr it would be nearly impossible to beat Samin even if they combined their powers all together but then Taesan/Mr. Tiger man was able to beat Samin so easily, all by himself once he got that blue power that looked like Goku’s kamehameha….

No matter how you slice it, this show comes back around to saying one thing, Look at Ma Dongseok/Taesan, doesn’t he look so cool?! Hehehe….

This show would be a disappointment if you were expecting a high quality superhero show cus of the cool concept. Also, if you are a huge Park Hyungsik fan, you would be just as disappointed if not more because they under used our dear Shikkie…At least they didn’t make him feel like a cameo as the show progressed but it didn’t matter because as you were getting used to Ogwi, they pulled the plug and I was a little upset that he didn’t get a proper ending. The ending just felt like a teaser heading to season two or something but I wonder if they’re gonna be able to make season two with this kind of reception….It’s really unfortunate because Twelve had a lot of potential, it really did….but they lost that opportunity……

Would I recommend this show to people? Yes and No…..

Yes, because the concept is cool and the fighting/action sequences are cool but if you were looking for a coherent story that makes sense maybe not….

I would also recommend this show to Hyungsik fans but I want to warn you that you might be disappointed in the way they use/utilize him. Like I said before, this show isn’t about Hyungsik, it’s about Ma Dongseok and how cool he is since the show didn’t really do Ogwi/Hyungsik’s character any justice towards the end. I feel like Samin had more to do than Ogwi.

When I first heard about this show, I was a little scared because I had a hard time fathoming Hyungsik playing a bad guy, not just any old bad guy but a demon. However, I was relieved that he wasn’t really evil and Samin was the real evil guy so I guess that’s a good thing but sadly, Ogwi didn’t have much to do compared to Samin.

Samin managed to tear off Ogwi’s wings and he it looked like Ogwi was in pain and this kinda reminded me of Goku from Dragon ball losing his tail and then losing a lot of his power. I can tell that Ma Dongseok is an anime fan by just this alone lol….

The thing that made me feel puzzled was like at the end all of the zodiac signs were having a good time, eating their chicken, introducing modern culture to the four zodiac signs who were dead for a while and I’m okay with all this but then all of a sudden the old lady Geumsoon and her old boyfriend joined as well…The thing that tripped me out the most was the fact that we got to see Geumsoon’s adult son his her grandchild but then I couldn’t really feel anything because Geumsoon’s family was never really mentioned apart from her mother who owned a food stall car when she was a young teen.

  1. I think Jen the writer would have done a better job with the script. And I completely agree, what’s annoying is how they managed Ogwi’s screen time; they wasted many scenes showing him immersed in his thoughts without doing much more than that, only perhaps in the last 3 episodes did he have a bit more action.

  2. Filler scenes….don’t get me started on that…..I hated the fact that they would black out the screen in between takes and it’s just a waste of time, they could’ve used that time to do something useful…..I dunno, this show felt like a badly written fanfic lol…Do you think my Taegeuk Warrior would do some justice? Lol….

But then again, maybe he decided to go for something less demanding yet film something supernatural that he tends to like….I can see that Buried Hearts burnt him out a bit so he was doing Ma Dongseok a favor but I still feel that they could’ve done a better job executing Ogwi’s scenes despite his smaller screen time…Honestly, his screentime wasn’t what upset me, it’s how they used him made me feel that way…..

  3. That’s great that you uploaded your review of Twelve. I was so angry with the execution of that drama. I had high hopes for it and expected it to offer something captivating, mainly because of Hyungsik, as he has been very enthusiastic about participating in fantasy and action projects. However, I feel like they used his popularity as bait to attract the audience, but as you mentioned, they greatly reduced his screen time. It’s a shame because when he’s given the proper space on screen, Hyungsik demonstrates everything he has to offer. But then again, perhaps he also accepted the role of Ogwi because it was a limited series—and after coming off a season of intense filming with Buried Hearts, he probably preferred to get involved in a less demanding project. IMHO I found the episodes hard to digest because the plot was very chaotic and had too many filler scenes. I must admit I would watch a romantic fantasy drama that focused much more on Ogwi and Mir, tho. Especially, I would be keen on how they got to know and fall in love with each other.
