Dr. Slump Episode 5: Review/Recap/My thoughts….( Spoiler Alert, if you haven’t watched the episode yet, please click out!)

·

I’m really beginning to love Dr. Slump. Honestly, I was so worried when they announced it. I know that Hyungsiks is a chemistry maker and also Shinhye is a good actress so I really didn’t have to worry but I did have other concerns though. I must say that this show is going smoothly so far.

I really love this Park-Park couple to the point where I’m kinda forgetting about the other Park-Park couple I used to love. That couple is Hyungsik and Boyoung, but now it’s Hyungsik and Shinhye all the way for me!

The beginning of episode 5 starts with Jungwoo and Haneul looking back to their high school days. They were both popular among the opposite sex of their school. Jungwoo was popular with the girls of his school and Hanuel was popular amongst the guys at her new school that she just transferred to. Jungwoo and Hanuel both couldn’t understand why they were popular amongst the kids of the opposite sex. However, as they reunited again as adults they just couldn’t help but to seek each other out when they were in need.

I don’t know why but back in High school they were rivals indeed but maybe deep down they were crushing on each other but they just didn’t know about it. Who knows? Maybe they did but they were too scared to approach each other that way.

Haneul filled out an application on a whim when she was a little drunk the night before but fortunately she was able to get herself an interview but this place was out of town, far away from home. Things didn’t work out and Jungwoo knew ahead of time that was gonna be the case cus of what his friend Kyungmin told him when they were having lunch together. Jungwoo was so worried that he stopped eating and took a train to Hwabon, Northern Gyeongsang province immediately.

At first Haneul looked uncomfortable but she just couldn’t chase him away so he was able to support her while she was going through a hard time. By this time it’s so obvious that Jungwoo does like Haneul and even the way Haneul looks at Jungwoo it’s easy to tell that even she is having some kind of feelings for Yeo Jungwoo.

Haneul was asking what Jungwoo was doing in Hwabon, Northern Gyeongsang province but he had to make something up so she wouldn’t think that he’s being weird or anything. Jungwoo said that he wanted to take a trip somewhere and it was so funny how he was trying to make silly mistakes to why he ended up in Hwabon, Northern Gyeongsang Province.

I really loved Jungwoo and Haneul grabbing each other in the arm every chance they got. They are just friends and they kept on denying it but they already seemed more like a couple in love than just friends.

Jungwoo and Haneul were so playful too. They went for a bike ride together but it wasn’t just a normal bike ride. They were competitive even when they were enjoying their little bike rides but it wasn’t the competitive spirit that a normal rival would have.

They were being playful about it and I found that to be very adorable. They were racing each other to see who would get to the finish line first and the one that got there later would get a flick on the forehead.

It looked like Haneul was gonna win the race but Jungwoo won. I loved the way he was being playfully competitive about it and this completely reminded me of how Hyungsik would act while gaming with his Wooga Brothers! Yeo Jungwoo is Park Hyungsik in a nutshell. I’m starting to think that Yeo Jungwoo is probably closer to the real Park Hyungsik than any of the characters he’s played over the years so far.

There were so many romantic moments between the two while they were in Hwabon. The way they look at each other seemed so natural to me and Hyungsik’s scorpio stare makes my heart beat each and every time no matter who he plays in these dramas!

Park Hyungsik is able to prove once again that he has a wide range, wide acting spectrum. Just in this one show, he’s able to display so many different types of acting abilities. Oh and I love the way Yeo Jungwoo dresses in Dr. Slump. The way Yeo Jungwoo dresses is a mix between Cha Dalbong, Ahn Minhyuk, Yoo Changsoo, Han Seonwoo, Jung Yihyun and Go Yeonwoo. I like Jungwoo in fancy suits, sophisticated outfits,  homey/comfy clothes, sporty clothes, and casual clothes. This is because Park Hyungsik looks good in anything and everything!

I really liked the part where Jungwoo used his fancy camera to take photos of them. At first it was just Nam Haneul then they ended up taking a couple photos together. The first one they took together seemed a little stiff and Jungwoo said they look too much like strangers so they ended up taking a few more where they actually look like good friends. When Jungwoo was taking photos of them I couldn’t help but to think of Han Seonwoo from Soundtrack! Jungwoo should learn how to take professional photos from Seonwoo….hehehehe…

Jungwoo and Haneul were gonna take the last bus to get home but they just missed the last bus because they ended up helping out an emergency patient. There was this old man and his grand-daughter/daughter walking out of the train station but he was about to pass out so Jungwoo and Haneul decided to help them out. Jungwoo gave the old man CPR but he ended up backing out because it kept on bringing up that traumatic feeling due to the incident so Haneul ended up taking care of the old man.

I really loved the hotel scene because Jungwoo was so shy about going there at first. They had no other choice but to sleep there since they just missed the last train because they were helping out the old man that just passed out. So, Haneul suggested that they find a nearby hotel and sleep there till the next morning. I loved Jungwoo’s reaction when she brought that idea up. Haneul was so cool about it and Jungwoo was like how could you say such a thing like that? If this was Yoo Changsoo it would’ve been the other way around. I find Jungwoo so real, he really does seem like a handsome guy next door.

However, Haneul gets two separate bedrooms since it would be weird if they shared the same room. Fortunately, there were two empty bedrooms but they were cleaning the other one up so they ended up hanging out for an hour in the room that Jungwoo’s gonna be staying in while they clean up the other room.

I love the little physical touches of Jungwoo and Haneul and they are so cute trying their best to make it seem like a friendly gesture. Jungwoo discovers that there’s a mini fridge in the room then he opens it and sees that there are a bunch of canned beers in there.

He hands her the beer can and they accidentally touch each other. Their facial expressions were killing me because they were super funny with their over the top reactions. Jungwoo accidentally sits on Haneul’s hand and she tells him that she doesn’t see him as a man. He is nothing but a lump of bodily flesh, a simple case of biology and a lump of  protein. I think all these words are a mere wordplay at best because Haneul obviously has a deeper feelings towards him.

When Jungwoo and Haneul are drinking their beers she starts telling him a moving story but Jungwoo ends up yawning and she asks him why he’s yawning when she is trying to tell him a touching story. This reminded me of Episode 2 when Jungwoo was telling Haneul a sad story and she was yawning then.

Haneul got a phone call and she realized that she forgot to call her family but the phone call was from Honrgan, her best friend. It seemed like Hongran was onto her and she kept on telling her that Yeo Jungwoo has a thing for him by the things he has been doing for her and the way he’s been acting all this time. Yep, Hongran is smart but it makes sense since she has a child and all. Hongran has a lot more experience than Haneul when it comes to social life. For Nam Haneul, her whole life was home, school and work.

After Haneul left Jungwoo alone briefly he was having nightmares while he’s awake. His mind was filled with all these traumatic images so when Haneul came back to tell Jungwoo that the other room was ready, he asked her to stay with her. For some reason this reminded me of when Changsoo asked Jiyi to stay with him on that rainy night in High Society. However, this felt more real while the other one sounded more like a HOT FAIRYTALE.

Jungwoo asks Haneul to stay with him but he tries to come up with a way to make it less awkward and he discovers that there’s a deck of Korean traditional card game and he tells her that he will teach her how to play the game. Haneul leaves the room and she talks to herself saying that it’s the most intense and cheesiest way to ask someone to play Go stop with them.

There was a box of Korean traditional Card game called Hwato/Go Stop and he asked Haneul if she wanted to play that with him and he’s willing to teach her because she’s probably never played it before. It’s funny how Jungwoo was grabbing her arm while saying all this. Man, they really have a way to show each other that they’re interested in each other in the cutest way.

Haneul was fanning herself because Jungwoo was grabbing her arm like that when he was talking about teaching her how to play Go stop. She made an excuse to put her bag in her room and she was talking to herself about the way he asked her to play Go stop with him.

It’s obvious that Jungwoo likes Haneul and also he needs a lot of support right now emotionally. He is trying his best to be there for Haneul since she’s going through her own drama but it seems like Jungwoo needs more emotional support than Haneul does and this is why he needs the company of Haneul.

I loved the part where Jungwoo was teaching Hanuel how to play Go stop and like she said she’s a fast learner. I loved how Haneul was really getting into it just like when he introduced her to Tetris.

Oh, I love Jungwoo’s white socks! Hyungsik has cute feet and his white socks bring that out too…..

I think things are gonna be happening between Haneul’s friend Hongran and Dr. Bin. Yoon Park’s character in this show is so silly which is so different from his previous role as Cha Dalbong’s older brother.

Hongran has a little boy that’s probably in kindergarten while Bin Daeyoung has a pre teen/ very early teen daughter. It’s so funny how Yoon Park is a father of a pre teen/teen daughter.

Hongran was trying to teach her little boy how to catch an insect for him but she was having a hard time doing that. Bin Eunjung, the daughter of Bin Daeyoung was complaining that she didn’t get enough allowance to do her hair, such a typical teen girl.

I thought it was cute of Jungwoo being considerate towards Haneul. They both took a cab home and he suggests that they go home separately so their family won’t have weird ideas about last night.

Haneul’s mom was hanging some clothes up on the roof top apartment and ran into Jungwoo and they got to know each other a bit more. Haneul’s mom briefly mentions about having a bbq party up there and he seemed okay with it too.

Haneul couldn’t go home because she was too scared to tell her family what really happened in Hwabon but her younger brother had a feeling that things didn’t go too well because of his previous experiences taking exams to be a civil servant.

Jungwoo walks straight home while Haneul goes to other places because she’s too scared to go home to face her family. Haneul goes to the arcade and she gets a call from Jungwoo while she is super into playing Tetris. He asks her where she is right now and she tells him that she’s home but by the background noise he knows exactly where she’s at. I thought it was super cute when Jungwoo grabbed Haneul’s ear while scolding her like a big brother in that fake authoritative voice that kinda reminded me of his characters from period dramas like Our Blooming Youth and Hwarang.

Jungwoo shows up at the arcade and they play a game up tetris together while acting like rivals again and they head to a local ma and pa grocery store and eat an instant ramen bowl together. After eating an instant ramen bowl they go to their old school to reminisce about their high school days. Haneul doesn’t want to go back home still so Jungwoo suggest that they go visit their old high school. The way Jungwoo tries to get Haneul to go back home made me think of Jungwoo like a big brother. Jungwoo has this big brother vibe with Haneul unlike himself back in high school.

They ask each other about what they would like to be or what they would do differently if they were back in school again and Haneul tells Jungwoo that she would like to get a higher SAT score. Haneul generally scored really high on test scores but not the SATs because she was sick during that time.

However, Jungwoo told Haneul that he would give her a hug because she looked like she was struggling and he felt bad about it. It was so sweet that he would do something so sweet like that if he were to go back to his high school days again.

This made Haneul emotional and it looked like she was about to cry. I mean, who wouldn’t want such a perfect guy like Yeo Jungwoo saying that to you?

Students are not allowed in the classroom on days that the school is closed so they knew that they would get in trouble if they were caught. However, they almost did get caught but they were able to hide in time so they didn’t get caught and I found this to be so darn adorable….

Once Haneul got back into her room after having a brief chit chat with her mom and brother she was texting Jungwoo. Jungwoo and Haneul texting each other seemed so heartwarming. This scene made me think about Changsoo and Jiyi back in High Society but the interaction between this couple in Dr. Slump feels more real to me or should I say, more organic to me….

Kyungmin, the so called mutual friend of Yeo Jungwoo and Nam Haneul calls him and asks him to come out. The two guys meet at a local coffee shop nearby, because Kyungmin wanted to see Jungwoo about something. Kyungmin had a candid camera that looked like a pen, he had it for a while but he finally contacted Jungwoo telling him that he found this strange item.

They both go to the police department to report it then Jungwoo goes back to his old plastic surgery office to see if there are candid cameras like that and of course he was right. Jungwoo found a few more hidden candid cameras installed in his old office.

Before they part ways Jungwoo tells Kyungmin to give Haneul a call to console her about what happened then Kyungmin asks Jungwoo if he has feelings for her. Jungwoo stays silent and Kyungmin says to him that he has no right to be happy and the facial expression that Jungwoo made really broke my heart.

Hanuel goes to a local pub to have a drink with her friend, Lee Hongran. Hongran tells Haneul that Jungwoo obviously likes her even if they both deny it. Haneul starts thinking about everything that Jungwoo has done for her up to this point and she realizes that Hongran does have a point. She practically runs over to his roof top apartment to ask him why Jungwoo has been doing all those things for him? And why has he’s been so sweet, nice and friendly to her for all this time ever since they met again after all those years?

Jungwoo thinks about what Kyungmin said to him so despite his true feelings, he told Haneul that she is just a good friend to him and he is sorry that he made her feel that way. Haneul looked really sad after hearing that, I guess she was looking forward to hearing a different answer but I knew this was gonna happen since we are only on episode 5 and Dr. Slump has 16 episodes altogether. It’s too early for them to get together.

Both Jungwoo and Haneul don’t realize that  Haneul’s family was having a grilled meat party up at the rooftop apartment.

Haneul’s little brother thinks that she got dumped by Junwoo even though they never officially became boyfriend and girlfriend so it’s really not a big deal though. Either way, Bada, Haneul’s little brother is really funny though even if he’s not trying to be funny at all.

It’s funny how Haneul’s whole family gives Jungwoo the cold shoulder because they think Jungwoo dumped her but that’s not the case at all.

It’s about time Bin Daeyoung meets Lee Hongran on the elevator. Hongran was looking at pictures of ladybugs on her phone and there was a ladybug on her lab coat, right on her shoulder and Bin Daeyoung catches it for her then she compliments him saying that he is so good at catching bugs. I’m looking forward to the interaction between these divorced people with kids. I cheer on Yeo Jungwoo and Nam Haneul but I also cheer on Lee Hongran and Bin Daeyoung too.

Jungwoo and Haneul run into each other at the subway station. Jungwoo is dealing with trauma right now. Whenever he sees blood or anything medically traumatic he either wants to run away from it or have traumatic episodes of some kind.

Haneul goes back to her psychologist to talk more about her depression and the doctor tells her about something and it hits her as if she had a EUREKA moment right then and there.

Jungwoo starts having bad dreams and he couldn’t help but to be crying a lot too and finally Haneul realized that he needs her more than she needs him so she goes to cheer him up.

Haneul ends up at the rooftop apartment and she is the one who gives him that hug he was talking about back in the classroom first. She told him that everything’s gonna be fine and she encouraged him with a hug and a few sweet words. The episode ended with the two hugging and it was so sweet, I’m looking forward to episode 6 tomorrow.

Dr. Slump is so addicting. I really love the main couple, Jungwoo and Haneul. I really love the development of these two because it feels so organic and realistic. It feels like a couple that you could probably see in real life more than some of the other Kdrama couples we have seen in recent years. I remember liking Ahn Minhyuk and Do Bongsoon a lot and even Jung Yihyun and Yoon Sebom but then I must say, we have a real winner here…..which are Yeo Jungwoo and Nam Haneul.

I also love the possible side couple, Lee Hongran and Bin Dae Young. They are divorced with kids so this gotta be interesting.

And I’m really curious about what this Kyungmin guy is really about. He seems like a mutual friend to both Jungwoo and Haneul but there is something about him that rubs me the wrong way.

  1. I think there will be more drama between this more than friends/less than lovers relationship.
And I guess Daeyoung and Hongran will bond over their difficulties in the parenting department. They could exchange advices on girly/boyish interests the other party doesn’t understand.
