Suits: (2018)

·

I think I can do a real review for this now. I finally watched it and now I can actually say something about it. Suits was originally based on some American Legal drama that came out back in 2011. Even as an American I had no idea about the American drama suits, not until Hyungsik came along anyways.

The original American Suits came out in 2011 and the Korean version came out in 2018.

Yeonwoo is from a struggling household. Both of his parents died from an accident years and years ago. His elderly grandmother lives in a sanitorium/nursing home. He occasionally would visit his grandmother and when he does it breaks his heart since there’s not so much he could do for her. And due to the unpaid hospital bills that’s been piling up, they wanted him to take her grandmother back home.

Seeing Hyungsik play Yeonwoo was kinda refreshing because I don’t think I’ve seen his character struggle so much like this. I’m not a huge fan of court/legal dramas but I watched it for Hyungsik and he did not disappoint.

Yeonwoo is a smart guy but due to his environment and to make a living he ended up working for a friend, Chulsoon. However, this Chulsoon guy played by Lee Sangyi, puts Yeonwoo in danger. Also Chulsoon makes his girlfriend Sehee played by Lee Shiwon worry about him too.

Yeonwoo is so smart that he’s able to memorize things he’s seen but the thing is, he has to be able to understand what he sees to remember it. Yeonwoo always wanted to be a lawyer since childhood because of what happened to his parents. Yeonwoo ends up working for Kang&Ham under Choi Kang Seok played by Jang Dong Geun.

He really didn’t want to deliver the goods but he felt like he had no other choice because he was having money problems. So he decided to bite the bullet and go deliver it to the guy. Park Joon Pyo is a son of a Chaebol and he met Yeonwoo at the club cus he was working for his friend Chulsoon. Junpyo made Yeonwoo do all kinds of stuff but he didn’t want to do it and this made him mad. This is why he told Chulsoon that the goods need to be delivered by Yeonwoo so he can give him a hard time.

When Yeonwoo got to the rooftop to meet up with Park Joonpyo to deliver the goods, he knew he was duped. That’s when he runs as fast as he could and escape the scene with the suitcase full of drugs.

The place he ends up is Kang& Ham at the end of the day because he thinks long and hard about his future, then makes the decision to go to Kang&Ham to try to apply for a job there. He is smart, and a genius so being a lawyer couldn’t be that difficult for him although the only thing is, he does not have any credentials….No degree in Law, and he never took the bar exam either.

Go Yeonwoo does catch Choi Kangseok’s eyes though. There were people that were after him because of the stuff that’s in his suitcase but he quickly and sneakily got rid of the content and Choi seemed impressed by it although he doesn’t really admit it flat out. He holds out the Joker card but later on in the series the cards that Choi gives Yeonwoo changes.

Yeonwoo might not be people smart but he is very book smart, he can remember all the details that he reads in books and he’s able to quote them vervatimly.

Yeonwoo’s smarts catches a lot of peoples eyes like Choi Kang Seok’s assistant Hong Daham played by Chae Jungan and paralegal Kim Jina played by Go Sunghee. Jina first sees Yeonwoo near the train station when Yeonwoo accidentally splashes water on her on his way to work with his bike. Jina is angry at him from the beginning but that anger turns into love or perhaps even obsession.

Before I talk more about the story of the drama I do want to mention something before I forget…..I really did not like the girl who played Jina played by Go Sunghee. She is just not likeable. At first I was able to understand her being mad at him because of Yeonwoo accidentally splashing water on her and all but she just gets mad at him for everything. This is why Yeonwoo says severly hating someone can also be interpreted as being interested in someone and his assumption ended up correct in the end.

Yeonwoo operates differently than Kangseok. Yeonwoo can be a bit emotional especially when it comes to situation he can relate to like that one incident where a mere twenty year old, Park Jungyu commits a hit and run that ends up killing an innocent by stander by the name Gwak Sung Hwa. Gwak Sung Hwa is a young man who’s an artist and his family is Joseon Jok…a Chinese that are ethnically Korean. Park Joongyu and his mother who’s a university professor is Choi Kang Seok’s client so technically Yeonwoo should be defending them. At this time, Yeonwoo was still a trainee so he didn’t go meet with his client by himself just yet.

The hit and run incident was very personal to Yeonwoo because that’s how he lost his parents at a young age and his elderly grandmother has been raising him ever since.

Ever since Yeonwoo has been working for Kang&Ham and he keeps on messing up the cases for them because at times he almost seems like as if he is representing the other side. But in his mind it’s not even about that, he just wants both sides to come to a fair agreement.

He wants to be able to listen to the other side and also of course to his own client and give him/her advices but this could rub his own client the wrong way. Yeonwoo is a bit naive but he has a good heart while Choi Kangseok has been around the block a bit so he knows reality, although he started out as innocent, naive and passionate at first.

At first I thought this show wasn’t gonna have romance but a friend of mine told me that there is so I went to it thinking that the romance element is gonna be there but not a whole lot. I was wrong…..Jina the paralegal was super into Yeonwoo but she showed her feelings through being angry all the time. I guess that’s different than Sikki’s other love interests from different dramas.

The raising the rabbit thing was funny though cus I had something different in mind but I realized midway that it was the rabbit stuffed toy. Jina had one with the pink/red tie and Yeonwoo won the one with the blue tie from one of those machines. Jina was all smiles when he gave her the rabbit stuffed toy.

There’s no doubt that there were cute moments between Yeonwoo and Jina. I really liked the scene where Yeonwoo was staring her down. This is Sikki’s trait in all his dramas…although he did less of this post Strong Woman Do Bongsoon and he relied on other methods to express himself in more recent dramas for some strange reason.

Yeonwoo is not only liked by Jina thae paralegal but he is also liked by certain people. There was this one old lady client who owns the Korean Traditional Sauce company and she liked him because he was willing to hear her out. Even her own children refused to do that and they were just interested in perhaps inheriting the company from her.

There also was an incident with this younger woman who was sued for her book and she wasn’t even Kang&Ham’s client. Kang&Ham were representing the guy that did her wrong who ended up raping her at a hotel room somewhere. She was a victim in her own right and Yeonwoo heard her out and he took Jina with him so it’ll be easier for her to talk to another woman. By this time Yeonwoo was doing things more on his own and Jina occasionally helping him.

Yeonwoo came in without a law degree, no bar exam and zero credentials on his resume but he saved Kang&Ham twice from crisis so I guess you can say that this young man is very capable it’s just that hes been dealt a bad hand in his life for so long that it was hard for him to get anywhere in life.

Yeonwoo had a lot of obstacles though cus he had to hide his situation from majority of the people there and that’s including Jina, Yeonwoo’s love interest. There were a few people in the Kang&Ham office who wanted Yeonwoo to fail. One of them is Lawyer Chae not Lawyer Choi. The names sound so similar that Yeonwoo was confused at first.

Also the man that’s even worse than Lawyer Chae is Ham Gi Taek, he’s the guy that owns half of Kang&Ham. Ham Gi Taek is played by Kim Young Ho.

One of the big incident was the hospital case. It was the hospital/sanitorium that his grandmother is staying at. The workers union was protesting and were on strike because the hospital needed to hire more people so they could properly take care of the patients.

Ham Gi Taek wasn’t really envolved with Kang&Ham much…The woman who in charge while Ham was away was Kang Ha Yeon played by Jin Hee Kyung. Ever since Ham Gi Taek came back, the people at the law firm were starting to find out about Yeonwoo’s identity and he was in the verge of being kicked from the company.

Lawyer Chae was always picking on Yeonwoo…making him go do the dirty work and saying that he is dating Jina. In Kang&Ham, office dating is prohibited. Lawyer Chae made him go to the clubs to get a hold of this famous musician. Yeonwoo manages to get him because he was able to win him over because he’s a fan of the guy and knows all the songs by him.

Yeonwoo had a rival by the name Lawyer Seo who is in a lot more advantageous situation than him. Jina was gonna team up with Yeonwoo for the mock trials but ever since his old friend Sehee came by to bring him some food, she was jealous of her then switched partners.

When Yeonwoo first came to Kang&Ham he got a lot of help from Jina and because of this they had little get togethers after work like going out to dinner and such. One time Yeonwoo couldn’t make it to dinner with her and she called to get a hold of him but couldn’t so she was so pissed off at Yeonwoo after this.

Because of Jina being mad at Yeonwoo she decided to pair up with Lawyer Seo played by Lee Tae Sun who was later in Our Blooming Youth with Sikki, so Yeonwoo had to find another partner but since its so last minute the only person he was able to find to help her was his old friend Sehee. Sehee was so nervous that Yeonwoo had to say something to help her relax and he used a personal story of Jina which was that rabbit tale that Jina shared with him.

Sehee used that rabbit story when she got nervous and Jina was even more pissed when she realized that he shared her personal story with Sehee….It’s funny how Jina thinks of Sehee as her rival when she is jsut his friend. And I thought it was stupid of Jina because she could’ve just asked him about her…She was beyond annoying. Jina and Aro are two female characters that annoy me from Sikki’s drama.

During the first mock trial Yeonwoo gave up but with the second one where Yeonwoo interrogated Jina, he went all the way to the point where Jina was in literal tears.

I mainly paid attention to Sikki’s character in this show because everybody else seemed boring and also Im not a huge fan of court/legal dramas so I skipped around a lot and watched all the important bits. Just watching the Sikki bits is fine, it won’t do you no wrong.
