I’ve been in this Boys Over Flowers kick as of late. I’ve been rewatching the anime, rereading the manga, watched the Japanese live action version but couldn’t find all of it so I wasn’t able to finish it then I finally decided to watch the Korean live action version which was way easier to find than the Japanese live action. I watched the anime on crunchyroll, the manga I read the online scanaltions, the Japanese ones I watched bits and pieces uploaded by a Korean blogger and finally I watched the Korean live action version on Amazon and Netflix.
In the anime and manga I was more focused on Domyoji Tsukasa and Makino Tsukushi. Although in the Manga I gave Nishikado Sojiro and Tsukushi’s friend Matsuoka Yuuki some love as well. In the Japanese drama version…….I was kinda going back and forth between Domyoji, Sojiro and Rui….However in the Korean Drama version I just couldn’t take my eyes off of So Yi Jung/The Korean Nishikado Sojiro. I think the main reason was because the actor Kim Bum who played So Yi Jung really brought Sojiro to life and it didn’t help that he was gorgeous!!!!!!!!!!! Also his chemistry with Chu Gaeul/ The Korean Yuuki Matsuoka who was played by the actress Kim So Eun who had excellent chemistry with the actor Kim Bum.
I would have to say I loved the Manga the best cus it had so much more detail and my next favorite would be the Korean drama version and the anime equally. It’s unfortunate that I’m not able to find the rest of the Japanese version to critique it properly.
I liked how they portrayed all the characters and I would have to say that it was similar to the anime and even the manga but it also did things slightly different like changing a few details around.
I really liked all of the F4 although, Yijung was my favorite in the Korean version. Goo Jun Pyo (Lee Min Ho) was weak when it came to his sister, loved following Geum Jandi ( Koo Hye Sun) around but acting like a big shot. Yoon Jihoo ( Kim Hyung Joong) was nice to Jandi although a little aloof and in his own world at first like Rui Hanazawa in the Anime and Manga. So Yi Jung ( Kim Bum) was such a suave gentlemen who can get any women with his chamrs. Song Woobin (Kim Jun) has a background of his family being part of the underworld and only dates older women that are way older than him. All of these characteristics were pretty much the same as the anime and manga.
I liked the fact that they didn’t completely change the story while changing a few details around to make it a little different. Some people like it when change a lot of things when it comes to adapataions while some like it when it’s exactly the same. But for me it doesn’t matter either way as long as it’s done with decency.
My favorite things about the Korean version was the romance between So Yi Jung (Kim Bum) and Chu Gaeul ( Kim So Eun). In the anime Nishikado Sojiro and Tsukushi’s friend Yuuki weren’t shown much. In the anime Nishikado and his other player friend Akira do go into the Desssert shop that Yuuki and Tsukushi work at from time to time but there are hardly any scenes where Nishikado and Yuuki interact. Although in the Manga there’s a lot more interaction between Sojiro and Yuki. In the manga they have this interaction but you know it’s not gonna end well, because Sojiro doesn’t want a relationship due to his past and his childhood trauma cus of his father’s womanizing ways.
On the other hand in the Korean version So Yi Jung/ The Korean Sojiro gives us hope about him and Chu Gaeul/ The Korean Yuuki, even though So Yi Jung is a player in this just like the anime and the manga. I think Kim Bum was so cute and his chemistry with the woman who played Chu Gaeul was superb. Kim Bum’s So Yi Jung was spot on and I was able to see Sojiro in him with a little bit of hope.
Jandi, Junpyo and Jihoo’s love triangle was just like the anime and the manga. The syncronicity to all the characters in the Korean version were like the manga and the anime so I liked it.
