Hi everybody. I normally review Korean dramas on my blog and I recently added a feature where I review Korean films but now I will be posting something different from what I intended to do on this site. Thanks to a friend of mine that gave me this great idea, I am gonna be posting a list of my top 10 favorite K-Drama couples. Numerous dramas air in Korea every year and I can only watch so many of those but out of all them that I have watched thus far I have selected 10 couples that made me feel warm and fuzzy. I will go from 10-1. So here it goes~!
10. Lee Junki and Shin Min Ah from Arang and the Magistrate
This couple is uniquely fantastical. The chemistry level is not super high but high enough to make it on this list. Lee Junki’s character is the magistrate and is quite manly but he has an ability to see ghost and Shin Min Ah’s character is a ghost name Arang. Arang is more or less a tomboy and her cute but boyish nature seems to fit with the magistrate quite well. This couple could have rated higher but the chemistry wasn’t high enough so its at number 10.
9. Choi Woo Sik and Uee in Hogu’s Love
I barely finished watching this show and I really loved it. At first I wasn’t able to see the chemistry between them but this couple kinda grows on you slowly but surely. Hogu is a novice when it comes to dating but he likes this one girl name Do Do Hee. Hogu is an assistant for his friend’s comic studio and Do Hee is a professional swimmer. They met ever since High School andHogu had a thing for Do Hee but had a hard time approaching her like a real man. At first I thought that this pair was doomed but as the show progressed I had a hopeful feeling. The spark seemed to be there and even some chemistry but lacks power.
8. Ji Chang Wook and Yoo Seung Ho in Warrior Baek Dong Soo
My one and only same gender couple on this list. I wasn’t going to add this couple because I didn’t want to offend anyone but I want to be true to myself and be able to freely express without any guilt so here it is. Yoo Seung Ho and Ji Chang Wook are my ultimate favorite Korean male actors period! So this is a double whammy for me. Having two of my favorite actors standing there together makes me feel like I’m on cloud 9. Anyways, where was I? These two were in a show called Warrior Baek Dong Soo. Ji Chang Wook plays the protagonist Dong Soo and Yoo Seung Ho plays Yeo Woon the antagonist. I really loved these characters and it was refreshing because it was dealing with friendship. In a lot of Korean dramas it’s usually a romance between a man and a woman and this drama was no exception since there was a romance element where these two guys are in between the woman. However, this show seems to focus more on the friendship between two men for the most part. I just couldn’t help but to ship these two and was even tempted to write a fanfiction for them. Even if its just two dudes, I felt that their chemistry was A LOT HIGHER than some Male and Female couples!
7. Jang Geun Seuk and Park Shin Hye in You’re Beautiful.
This drama took Korea by storm back in 2009 and it was so hot that it even made Japan take interest in it. I remember when I first saw this show I couldn’t help but to ship Jang Geun Seuk and Park Shin Hye right off the bat. With some couples it takes a while for me to ship depending on the pair and also depending on the drama but with this couple I didn’t even have to think twice. They had chemistry and I felt it. It was an honest and sincere chemistry. Park Shin Hye looked so cute with her short hair, like a boy and all. For some strange reason Jang Geun Seuk just seems to look cute with a short haired girl and Park Shin Hye was able to pull off being a girl with short hair. I remember I was rooting for them from beginning to end. I still can’t forget their onscreen chemistry that I almost thought that they were going out in real life.
6. Jo Hyun Jae and Han Chae Young in Only You
The tomboyish Han Chae Young and a neat freak Jo Hyun looked so cute together. The good looking barbie doll like Han Chae Young seemed so right for a difficult to deal with Jo Hyun Jae in Only You. Just like the You’re beautiful couple above, this duo had a powerful spark and chemistry. Every time they were getting closer to one another I was rooting for them. Also, if they made some kind of skin contact I would be blushing like a little girl.
This couple argued a lot because of their differences in the thought process but they were able to overcome it. It was so cute that Han Yi Joon was changing bit by bit for the woman he loves. Cha Eun Jae is pretty bullheaded at times but she is brutally frank with how she feels for the most part. The way she talks to her man is so adorable despite the fact they don’t agree with each other all the time.
5. Ji Chang Wook and Oh Ji Eun from Smile Dong Hae
This couple made me blush through and through. Ji Chang Wook is so good to Oh Ji Eun or should I say Dong Hae is so good to Bongyi. They don’t start out anything resembling a couple. They started out as people that would never date let alone even be friends. However, thanks to the mutual person they know, these two were able to meet but their first impressions of each other was more or less bad. I felt like this couple earned it though. In a lot of K-Dramas there’s not enough build up so when they get together you just can’t help but to go, “Oh.” With this duo, when they get together there is a huge pay off. The reason is because I felt like this couple earned it. They are also very adorable together as if they are teenagers in love again. You can’t help but to sing the Kwiyomi song or even do the bbuing bbuing with this lovely couple.
4. Kim Nam Gil and Lee Yo Won in Great Queen Seon Deok
Let’s see….How should I put this? This is a bitter sweet couple. I did a review of this this show on one of my earlier posts. I don’t want to spoil anything but this couple just makes me want to yearn for more. When you look into their eyes you see pain and longing. So you can’t help but to pray for them even if you know the outcome already. When you see these two, you know they love each other. However, for awhile you get really confused if their feelings are even genuine.
Great Queen Seon Deok is a drama that contains 62 episodes but I didn’t really figure out that they really loved each other until latter half of the show. Once I realized their feelings for one another I knew that there was something deep but something that could not be obtained. Their eyes speak for itself. You don’t even have to hear them talk because it’s all in the eyes.
Their chemistry was very strong but very subtle at the same time so at first its hard to tell. I loved the way these two actors were able show romantic feelings for each other without being over dramatic. Even with the low key way of doing things, it speaks louder than over the top expressions. They don’t even have to kiss or anything, even just a touch of the hand seems so much more powerful than kissing all over the place.
3. Jo Hyun Jae and Seo Hyun Jin in King’s daughter Soo Baek Hyang
This couple is classy. Classy is the best word I can find to describe this couple. Jo Hyun Jae’s character Myongnong is not every good with expressing his feelings to the woman he loves at first and same goes for Seo Hyun Jin’s character which is Solan. This couple has build up just like Smile Donghae’s couple that I mentioned above but the only difference is that this couple does it in a more classier manner and at times in a more humorous kind of way.
It’s so hard to see couple likes this in your average Korean Drama. A lot of the times men seem to be too rough and women are either damsel in distress or too haughty for their own good. However, Solan has a good balance. She is tomboyish but girly at the same time which is kinda hard to do. Myongnong seems like a hardass but he is kinda naive like a little boy.
These two seem like a couple that are almost like soulmates, bound to be together no matter what. This pair is also known as the chicken couple to some. Solan really loves to eat chicken but most women from that era love luxurious items like jewelry and silk clothes. See? Solan is very eccentric and so is Myongnong for giving her favorite chicken dish as a gift and his underlings were teasing him for that.
This duo is so silly but their chemistry and spark go through the roof. I think that I felt the chemistry from the very beginning and it went steady till the show was over and yes I was craving for more. Oh and I gotta say that my favorite scene with these two is the tattoo scene fore sure! You just gotta watch this couple in action!
2. Yoo Seung Ho and Park Eun Bin in Operational Proposal.
Yoo Seung Ho and Park Eun Bin have been in other dramas together. I think their first encounter was for their first commercial which was for children’s clothing advertisement. The second time for them meeting was during Taehwang Sa Shinki then it was in Great Queen Seon Deok and Operational Proposal. This is their 4th time working together, so, they were bound to be natural.
While watching them I was forgetting that I was watching a tv show. They acted so naturally that it felt like a normal guy and a girl that were just doing their thing. Maybe it’s because of those handful of encounters previously but I don’t think I can use that as an excuse since I have seen other actors that had several experiences together in dramas but don’t look natural at all.
Also, this couple just looks classy and comfortable. Just looking at these two makes me feel at ease. Sparks flow with high tension chemistry and with this, I should be a nervous wreck but I feel so peaceful as if these two are like my old friends. This pair seem beyond the physical and I don’t think I want to use the term’soulmate’ either.
They seem more spiritual than anything and this blessed union that are bound to be together till the end. Seeing this couple on the screen makes me let out a satisfied but peaceful smile. Sometimes I even wished that they were together in real life. When I ship couples from Korean Dramas I just do it for the show and I rarely ship them as real life couples.
1. Ha Ji Won and Hyun Bin in Secret Garden.
This couple drove me wild. Hyun Bin’s character as Kim Joo Won was very eccentric but sexy. Ha Ji Won’s character as Kil La Im as the sexy stuntwoman was awesome as well. There were so many scenes in this show where it highlighted the cuteness of this duo.
I don’t even know if I know enough adjectives to describe them. This couple reminds me of beverages. Why is that you might ask and what’s with the drink analogy? Well…it’s because both Ha Ji Won and Hyun Bin taste like drinks to me.
At times they feel like sour lemonade and sometimes they seem like bitter cappuccino and from time to time they are like strawberry juice. This couple makes me think about the 5 flavors of drinks. Sweet, Sour,Bitter,Spicy and sometimes even salty. However, I think they resemble strawberry juice and cappuccino more than anything.
They have a lot of silly but childlike scenes and it makes me just squirm and scream like a little girl. The main scene that made me feel like that is the photo above this long paragraph caption. Kim Joo Won wanted to participate in the work out and Kil La Im helps him but the way they look at each other is so cute but nerve wrecking.
Every time Joo Won looked at La Im she turns all girly girl unlike her boyish self. She has a hard time looking at him but when she has the courage to glance at him I say, “KYAHHH!” like a crazy fangirl.
Another scene was where they go to the cafe and Joo Woon wipes La Im’s whip cream with his lips. This is kinda corny but scream worthy and also it doesn’t help that he spits out some cheesy lines. This couple isn’t spiritual or even like soulmates like couple #2 and #3 but I gave this one a number one because their chemistry was just through the roof to the point where I could not think of ways to express any of this with human words. I don’t think they have been in a drama together before but they had this powerful spark. There were so many moments where I just coudln’t help but to fangirl like crazy.
Bonus: Seo In Guk and Jeong Eun Ji in Reply 97
I was going to just do 1-10 originally but I decided to add a bonus. As I was writing all the explanations to why I chose the couples above, all of a sudden, this particular pair came to mind and this didn’t happen until I was on my last one. This duo deserves to be on this list because they felt so natural together. They were so warm and cozy. The deal maker was their kiss scene. I believe their kiss happened on the picture above. The kiss between them was so real that they seemed like an actual couple. Like what I was saying about couple #2 ,their interaction felt very realistic that I couldn’t help but to root for them. The kissing scenes weren’t the only thing that made them have a powerful spark but also in other areas as well. For example: their body language seemed like as if they were actually dating and maybe this is the reason why a lot of fans thought that they were together in real life.
